The Man Who Loved Books Too Much & Doctor Farmer

I had a hard time reading The Man Who Loved Books Too Much, I thought it was kind of hard to get into a story that revolved so much around books. I love to read books, but I don’t like to read about books… if that makes sense. I do admit it was interesting to read about someone who was so obsessed with books, I’ve never really thought about someone being like that. The only thing I’ve ever collected was Beanie Babies when I was in elementary school, I probably had about two storage buckets full of them. I loved them but not enough to steal them. My grandma bought me a book that showed you all the rare beanie babies and how much they were worth. I didn’t have any of the rare beanie babies but my best friend who was really rich had a lot of them. She never played with them though, where I played with my beanie babies all the time. She would throw a fit if one of the tags of her beanie babies fell off. Like someone was talking about in class, I rather get something out of whatever it is I’m collecting rather than just being able to say you have it and never touching it again. Though I was only 6 or 7 years old so I didn’t really think about how much they would be worth someday, I just knew they were toys and that I wanted to play with them all the time.
The story about Doctor Farmer I liked a little better, I’m not very into doctor books or shows because it grosses me out and makes me light headed when I read all the details. I did think it was a good story though, I liked how Farmer always thought about everyone else before himself, he always wanted everybody to be healthy even though he couldn’t afford to go to a doctor he helped them anyways.

  1. What turned you off about the book was actually what I enjoyed, hearing about old books and all the different stories behind them. I understand where you are coming from however, and now that I consider it I think that if I had read the entire book, as oppose to just a few chapters, I too would have grown tired of "reading about books."
I had to comment on your post because you mentioned beanie babies and I couldn't stop laughing. I was OBSESSED with beanie babies in gradeschool, they are the only thing I can remember really being dedicated to collecting. It's funny you mention the book too, because I had one as well. I remember flipping through it and looking at all the rare and expensive ones and wanting them soo bad! My mom wanted me to sell them at a yard sale a few years ago but I only gave up about half. Sad, I know. I'm sure she has gotten rid of the rest. Oh Beanie Babies!
I didn't like the story about Doctor Farmer better, but I agree that he was a wonderful man. You don't hear about many people these days that are that selfless.

  2. I agree with you about the man who loved books too much. I couldnt really get into it very much either. i thought it was boring. I remember some of my friends collected beanie babies very seriously it was ridiculous. dont see them around much anymore tho. I also have never wanted something so bad i would steal it and im not sure what culd make do that. I thought it was crazy how much some books could cost. i knew they could get expensive but i never realised how expensive.
